Black pottery cup, Shang dynasty

BLACK POTTERY CUP

商代黑陶“托盞”

Late Xia dynasty or Shang dynasty, late 2nd millennium BCE

16.5cm high

Description: This black pottery vessel has an unusual shape, similar to a stem cup and its stand joining together. Both top and bottom parts are decorated with typical zigzag patterns that appear on other Shang dynasty potteries. Wide bands surround the rim, on top and bottom of the zigzag pattern. There are vertical lines inside the bands. The whole vessel is burnished and coated in black exposing some grey surface from inside. Some natural plant roots stick to the surface showing its long time burial age.

Provenance: An American collection
